(Y/n) had high hopes for this week. Tanjiro had been issued a break from his demon-slaying duties. It would be the first non-medical break he agreed to take since he joined the corps. Granted it took a lot of convincing from (Y/n) but she got through to him. With this in mind, Tanjiro should be able to spend more time than usual with her but…
“Where the hell is he?” (Y/n) grumbled, unable to resist the urge to tap her foot impatiently on the ground while she waited for Tanjiro in the garden. The festival was going to start soon. There is no way Tanjiro would be late. He was always punctual when it came to spending time with her. Her heart paused as Inosuke walked out, expecting Tanjiro and Zenitsu to follow but they never came.
“Inosuke where’s Tanjiro?” An ounce of hope remained in (Y/n). She thought of a few logical reasons as to why he was running late. Perhaps he was having trouble dressing into the yukata she picked out for him.
“Gonpachiro? Monitsu was crying and begging him to go with him on a solo mission. Anyways let’s go to that festival! I’m hungry!” Inosuke tried to lead (Y/n) away but she dashed to Tanjiro’s room.
It was empty. Nezuko’s room was also empty.
(Y/n) clutched onto her kimono and bit her bottom lip as tears threatened to fall. “Nothing ever changes with him.”
…
Tanjiro and Zenitsu returned a couple days later carried on the backs of some Kakushi. The demon they faced was troublesome, draining their energy with its blood demon art they won with Nezuko backing them up.
“Good thing I came with you Zenitsu.” Tanjiro chimed.
“Yeah, I own you one, Tanjiro.” Zenitsu straightened up when he suddenly heard a disturbance in the force.
“Tanjiro!” (Y/n) stomped over. The scent of irritation and disappointment emitting off her had Tanjiro forget his exhaustion and straighten to attention. “Did you forget something?” She asked ominously.
The cogs in Tanjiro’s mentally exhausted brain short circuit no matter how long and hard he tried to think what could be angering (Y/n). He shook his head. “No. Why?”
“No! Why?! Really?! You-” (Y/n) choked as her eyes watered up. She wanted to yell and smack him right then and there but for the sake of sparing Zenitsu and the two Kakushi from an awkward situation, she walked away.
“(Y/n) wait!”
“Forget it! Just like you forget everything else!” (Y/n) yelled in a wavering voice.
Tanjiro wriggled out of the Kakushi’s grasp and handed Nezuko’s box to Zenitsu before chasing after (Y/n). He grabbed her hand before she could slip into her room. “(Y/n) tell me what’s wrong?”
“What’s wrong? Well, I’ll tell you what’s wrong! You promised to take me to the festival and then you turn tail and go on a mission with Zenitsu on your break no less! How could you forget?! You’re the one who suggested we go!”
Tanjiro heaved. The color drained from his face as he recalled what (Y/n) had just mentioned. “Oh my- I’m so sorry (Y/n)! This was Zenitsu’s first solo mission, and he was very distressed about it so-”
“So, you decided to go with him and not tell me beforehand!” (Y/n) wiped the tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I’m sorry. It’s my fault. I’ll tell you next time.”
“Next time?! I don’t want there to be a next time. This has happened ever since you joined the corps Tanjiro. I bet you have forgotten all the times you did the same thing! It’s so tiring to be disappointed and,” (Y/n) clutched her chest in an attempt to stop her sniffling, “I’m just tired of being tired.”
She yanked her hand out of Tanjiro’s grasp and smack the shoji shut right in front of his face. Tanjiro could only stand out in the hallway in shock. Taking in everything (Y/n) had just said, he finally remembered every moment he disappointed her with promise after promise, none of which were fulfilled on account of him doing things for others.
And after all (Y/n) did to ease his burdens, even following him into the demon slayer corps to support him on his quest, he never once paid her back with the quality time she so desperately wanted.
