Classic car appreciation depends on multiple factors, including the purchase price, the condition of the vehicle, the model's rarity, your restoration and maintenance costs, and how much you can sell it for.
What will happen to classic cars after 2035? Good news for classic car enthusiasts, the sale and use of classic cars will still be allowed. However, running and maintenance costs are likely to increase. Cars that are already rare may become even more sought-after as collector's items, increasing their value.
Classic cars are not being banned, but it's likely the next few decades will see a shift that may eventually present a challenge for classic car drivers. This includes increased availability of electric car charging points and decreased space at fuel stations for traditional petrol and diesel pumps.
While it could indirectly affect classic cars and collectors, governments are more focused on limiting new gas-powered cars instead of old ones. In summation, classic car owners shouldn't spend too much time worrying about the future. New cars may be different, but there will always be room for classics.
Thirty-two percent of Gen Z and 30% of millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) say they “have either owned, or currently own a classic enthusiast vehicle.” Hagerty doesn't explain what cars it considered classics for the survey. Some states allow owners to register a vehicle as historic after as little as 20 years.
Experts say it has to do with inflation. "The costs of goods in all services have gone up, so that's kind of maintained or even increased the values of these new cars," Oster said. Industry professionals say, for certain consumers, now may be a good time to buy a certified pre-owned vehicle.
As new car production decreases, fewer options are available for buyers, thereby increasing the demand for used cars and raising their prices. Historical trends in new car production, such as downturns and disruptions like the pandemic, have also contributed to the increase in used car prices.
As long as there is still an interest in classic cars, (as in, people who want to own them, drive them, restore them etc.), they will have a future. A lot will depend on the legal requirements concerning their use. Some countries already prohibit or severely restrict the use of cars that are more than a certain age.
