FAQs

Elements of a Catholic Funeral

A funeral Mass or service with either the body or cremated remains present. The service is referred to as a Memorial Mass if the body is not present. A graveside service with burial of the body or cremated remains or the placing of the remains in a columbarium or mausoleum.

A jazz funeral is a funeral procession accompanied by a brass band, in the tradition of New Orleans, Louisiana.

The first part is the Vigil service, which takes place at the wake. Next is the Funeral Mass, which is the traditional funeral ceremony. Finally, there is the Rite of Committal. Reciting the Rosary, or a set of prayers, is a tradition that's performed at the wake.

The funeral and burial take place between 2 and 7 days after someone has died — typically around three days after. The ceremonies are usually not held on a Sunday, as this day is reserved for the traditional Sunday church service. Funerals and burials are not held on some Holy Days, such as Easter.

Rite of Committal (Burial or Interment)

It is normally celebrated beside the open burial space and presided by a priest or deacon. A particular prayer is recited if the place of burial is to be blessed. The body will be placed in the burial space, as the community expresses their farewell prayers.

If a parish has its own cemetery, the deceased members of the faithful must be buried in it unless the deceased or those competent to take care of the burial of the deceased have chosen another cemetery legitimately. §2. Everyone, however, is permitted to choose the cemetery of burial unless prohibited by law.

The Catholic Rites are comprised of three separate and vital parts. The Vigil, Funeral Mass and the Committal. Through these sacred and solemn Catholic Rites, the family and friends of the deceased are reminded of the companionship and support of Christ and all believers.

In your mercy look upon this grave, so that your servant may sleep here in peace; and on the day of judgement raise him/her up to dwell with your saints in paradise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.
